SEO No Longer Optional, Now A Necessity

I’ve been in the SEO industry for about six years now.  That’s six years that I’m counting which includes professional experience and consultation that I have provided to others.  For as long as I can remember there was always an urge for search.  My fascination with the way people searched on the web had always been there.  It wasn’t until around 2005 though when I truly decided to pursue this passion professionally.  Search Engine Optimization impacts every brand on the web today.  Regardless of whether you’re a profit or non-profit organization that’s seeking to create more awareness about your products and services.  Visibility matters!  If you aren’t found, you’re losing on potential revenue.

On Friday, Nov. 3, 2011 the SEO community received a wake up call that may have left an aftershock thru the weekend and perhaps for the weeks to come.  For anyone that’s interested in Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and internet marketing specialists in particular will find the following information to be quite resourceful.  Google’s “Freshness” update was discussed by none other than SEOmoz CEO & Co-Founder Rand Fishkin (@randfish).  This time around on special whiteboard Friday next to Rand was Mike King (@iPullRank) sharing the new changes in Google’s algorithm which have reflected approximately 35 percent of searches in the Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs). Your web presence serves as the virtual representation of your brand on the internet.  An image to your audience that identifies your business by outlining its products and services.  How much traffic is your web presence receiving though?  Do your website pages have proper on-page optimization elements embedded within to attract the right type of audience?  As I was starting out in the marketing industry many moons ago there’s one thing that stuck in my head.  “Why have a website if nobody can find it?”  Something that a former employer of mine kept repeating over and over like a broken record.  Sort of like an informal slogan for his company that never got a seal of approval.  Well, he’s quite right frankly.  You can’t profit from a web presence if nobody can find it in search engines when searching for product or services related to your industry.

It sounds all too familiar and quite frankly a bit depressing at this point.  For anyone that has a website presence recent changes to Google’s algorithm have caused quite a bit of havoc in the SEO community.  For the sake of formalities let’s clarify first what Google Panda exactly stands for to get everyone on the same page.  Over the course of the last two or three weeks the might search engine giant Google has been making tweaks to its indexing algorithm.  The reflection of this impacts visibility of your domain in the Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs) but more so the algorithm which GoogleBot uses to crawl your website url.  These particular changes have been code named Panda or recently known as Google Panda.
